Beyond the Checklist: Essential Pre-Trip Tips for Overlanding and High-Altitude Adventures
Overlanding, car camping, tent camping, and trekking – these adventures offer incredible experiences, but preparation is key. Sure, you’ve got the standard car checkup, tow hooks, tire repair kits, and jumper cables on your list. But based on my own experiences, here are some additional recommendations to ensure a smooth and safe journey, especially when venturing to high altitudes:
Double Down on Tire Safety:
- Loosen and Retighten Lug Nuts: This may seem obvious, but it’s crucial. Automatic tire machines can over-tighten lug nuts, making roadside changes a nightmare. Before your trip, loosen and then retighten your lug nuts using a wrench with the recommended torque.
There were two vehicles stranded during my Adi Kailash trip. They were not able to open their lug nuts.
- Test Your Jack: Don’t wait for a flat tire to discover your jack is faulty. Before you leave, practice using your jack on a level surface to ensure it functions properly.
There was one vehicle stranded on Om Parvat route as their jack was not working.
Respecting the Altitude:
- Acclimatization is Key: High-altitude adventures require proper acclimatization. This means gradually ascending and allowing your body to adjust to the thinner air. Don’t push it. Take an extra day if needed to avoid altitude sickness.
Severe breathing issues were there for few bikers near Adi Kailash and they were not able to sleep the entire night.
- Go Higher, Sleep Lower: This mountaineering wisdom applies to overlanding as well. During the day, explore higher elevations, but descend to a lower altitude for sleep. This allows your body to recover in a more familiar environment, promoting better sleep and aiding acclimatization for the next day.
Remember: These are just a few additional tips based on my experiences. Always prioritize thorough car maintenance and research your specific destinations for any necessary permits, road conditions, and weather forecasts. By being prepared and respecting the challenges of high altitudes, you can ensure your adventure is filled with memories, not mishaps.
