Confessions of a Camper: More Than Just Sunrises and Sunsets

Sure, the pictures make it look dreamy – sunsets over glistening lakes, crackling campfires under starry skies, twinkling lights, cozy tents, beautiful caravans and car camping set ups nestled amongst towering pines. But let’s be real, folks, camping isn’t all sunshine and s’mores. As a seasoned camper, I’m here to spill the (not-so) beans on the hilarious, relatable, and sometimes frustrating reality of life amongst the trees.

#CampingConfessions

Confession #1: Bugs. They are legion. We all know it, we all pray against it, but the moment you unzip your tent or open your car, the mosquito army swarms. I’ve mastered the art of repelling, swatting, and pretending not to itch in equal measure.

Confession #2: Packing: An eternal struggle. It’s an age-old camper’s conundrum – bring everything and risk Mount Everest-worthy pack weight, or face the wrath of forgetting the essential sleeping bag (trust me, it’s essential). Packing light is a mythical beast, yet I chase it every trip.

Confession #3: Nature is beautiful, but also…smelly. Don’t get me wrong, the fresh air is invigorating, but let’s not forget the “earthy” aromas of low tide, camp toilets, and occasionally, your fellow campers’ culinary experiments. Nature has its own unique perfume.

Confession #4: Camp food: Gourmet it ain’t. Forget five-star meals. Camping is the land of burnt food, questionable dishes, and the eternal struggle to keep anything remotely green from wilting in the sun. But hey, there’s a certain charm to campfire-singed barbeque and stories shared under the stars.

Confession #5: Technology detox? More like technological torture. Let’s face it, while it’s good to disconnect, the occasional ping of “no service” can send shivers down the spine of a social media-addicted soul. FOMO is real, even in the wilderness.

Confession #6: Weather: Nature’s unpredictable prankster. Sunshine one minute, heavy downpour the next. Camping teaches you the art of adaptability, whether it’s scrambling to waterproof your tent in a monsoon or basking in unexpected sunshine with a steaming mug of coffee.

#WeatherWhims

Confession #7: Sharing the campsite: It’s a gamble. Some neighbors are angels, sharing stories and laughter around the fire. Others…well, let’s just say earplugs become your best friend. Learning to appreciate (or politely tolerate) diverse camping styles is part of the experience.

Confession #8: Despite it all, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The sore muscles, the occasional sunburn, the questionable meals – it’s all worth it for the moments of pure connection with nature. The feeling of accomplishment after pitching a perfect tent, the awe under a star-studded sky, the shared laughter around a crackling fire – those are the memories that keep me coming back, year after year.

#WorthTheAdventure

So, if you’re considering dipping your toes into the world of camping, be prepared for the unexpected. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s always an adventure. And hey, at least you can say you’ve experienced the “real” side of camping, beyond the perfectly curated Instagram shots. Now, grab your bug spray, pack your sense of humor, and get ready to make some unforgettable memories (and maybe a few hilarious stories of your own).

Happy Overlanding & Camping!
